SUMMARY:Seed Collecting: Native Plant Seeds from the Prairie Email Campaign November 16\, 2024
DESCRIPTION:Collecting Native Plant Seeds: What you need to know!\nCollecting native plant seeds is a great way to increase native plants in your yard and garden. This Seed Collecting Foray will inform us on the ethical ways to collect native plant seeds; how to identify native vs non-native plants & seeds; and how to keep them viable until you plant them. \nCollect today\, then plant them in our Winter Seed Sowing event in January!\nBe on the lookout for our very popular Winter Seed Sowing class in January 2025! Sowing native plant seeds in the winter is the best way to grow native plant for the spring. We will show you how to sow them in “mini home made greenhouses”\, or sow them directly outside in the snow. \nWhat you need to bring:\nDress for the weather! Wear long pants & long sleeves\, and closed toed shoes. Bring large manilla envelopes (purchase at a budget store) or paper sandwich bags (at least 10 each)\, and permanent markers for labeling. Bring your water bottle too! \nRain Date?\nWe will reschedule if it has rained too much right before or during the seed collecting. If they are too wet they will mildew. We will email everyone who registers\, and post on the NCEC Facebook Events page and through NCEC E-news\, if we need to cancel on November 16 & reschedule.

SUMMARY:Make Your Own Dauber for Invasive Shrub Removal!
DESCRIPTION:Do you have woody invasive species on your property and need help getting rid of them?\nThen come to this “Make & Take Herbicide Dauber” workshop! \nNon-shrubby invasive plants can be removed without herbicides by pulling or digging them up\, or by covering with dark tarp over a whole growing season if it is a large tract. \nAutumn Olive\, Non-native Bittersweet\, Bush Honeysuckle \nBut what about shrubs such as Autumn Olive (Elaeagnus umbellata)\, invasive (or Oriental) Bittersweet (Celastrus orbiculatus Thunb)\, or Bush Honeysuckle (Lonicera spp.)? These plants have big root systems that can be difficult to dig. And if you have a large tract of property that is being overrun by any of these shrubs\, using an herbicide in a controlled manner may be the best way for you. \nWhy use an Herbicide Dauber? \nA dauber allows you to carefully place the herbicide right on the cut stem or stump of the shrub. It is then drawn down to the roots where it is needed to kill the plant. This targeted approach is safer and more effective than foliar spraying an herbicide. \nMake & Take your Dauber – and Hands-On Practice at Karner Blue Sanctuary \nAt this workshop you will make your own dauber\, learn about the different herbicides that are specific for woody shrubs\, and how to carefully use them. We will then practice at the Karner Blue Nature Sanctuary\, where Autumn Olive eradication is much needed. So you will not only go home with your own dauber and knowledge on how to use it\, you will also help in the restoration of our unique local nature sanctuary! (An 8 minute drive from the workshop). \nCome for free! Go home with a Dauber for Half Price! \nYou can come to the workshop for free\, even if you do not want to go home with an herbicide dauber. You will still learn a lot\, and provide much needed help at the Karner Blue! \nAll Dauber materials will be provided. We will put them together at the workshop. The cost for the finished dauber is $20. This is half the price of the materials\, which is being discounted by a local hardware store. Purchasing a ready made dauber can cost between $50 to $150. So this is a great savings for you! \nThe First 3 People who Register and Come to the workshop will get a Free Dauber! \nA local lover of our beautiful Michigan environment is providing this great opportunity. Come to the workshop and meet this native habitat enthusiast! \nOnly 16 Dauber Kits are available – Register Now to Claim Yours! \nThe first 16 people who register and come to the workshop will be eligible to purchase and make their daubers. And the first 3 who register and come will get theirs for FREE! \nRegister Here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/make-your-own-dauber-for-invasive-shrub-removal-tickets-1036719344467?aff=oddtdtcreator
